Our cooperative effort at camp
Our camps are a cooperative effort between school staff and Warriuka staff. The relationship between school staff and ours is one of a partnership in the running of your camp. The whole concept of Warriuka depends on the positive involvement of both our staff and yours, with the students.

This partnership starts when you first contact a Warriuka staff-worker regarding the possibility of a camp for your group. We will plan the camp together, with emphasis on your aims and goals in the application of our program to your group. At camp the partnership continues, as we execute the camp program as a joint staff team.

As far as "Who does what?" during camp, the following distinguishes our roles:

  • Discipline and group control are primarily your concern as the teacher in charge of your group. The camp is a school activity, and school rules and guideline apply. We cannot step completely out of these roles, and neither would we wish to, as we need to exercise authority when appropriate. However, general group supervision (such as lights out times) are your responsibility.
  • The running of the adventure activities is our role. We are providing the expertise and equipment, and we do not expect you to make decisions about activities where you do not have expertise.
  • The leading of a small group is usually our role, although we would like this to be in partnership with you. Your inputs and involvement is welcome and is appreciated by students and by our staff. You may wish to include specific educational sessions within camp, or to organise particular evening programs.

Camp staffing
Warriuka employs staff to oversee the running of the program and its administration. Additionally, we have a pool of voluntary associate staff from which teams are put together for each camp.

Each camp has a Warriuka Director appointed to run it. He or she will liase with you before and after camp, and assemble the Warriuka staff team. Warriuka staff teams have extensive experience in running camps with schools, local knowledge of the camp venue, and will be skilled in the activities which they are to instruct.

Interns are staff who are taking part in a 6 to 12 month traineeship. They are often completing a Certificate 4 in Outdoor Recreation. Each camp will have interns on the staff team.

Volunteer staff are selected to fill the requirements for activity leaders and small group facilitators. These people are involved in youth leadership in our vacation camping programme and/or in school and church organisations. Our staff are trustworthy, friendly and suited to the job.

Small Group Times
In all our camps students opperate in small groups. These groups are lead by a member of the Warriuka staff and we encourage school staff to actively participate in these groups.

Debriefing is a time is set aside each day for reflecting on what has happened during the day, making any changes and learning from the experiences. This time is also ised to build the group and help studetns participants get to know each other better.

Journals can also be part of this expereince. The camp journal assists inthe process of making camp a useful experience for participants. It contains information about the camp, discussion material and room for students to record thoughts and feelings.

What is our approach to Christian education?
Warriuka is part of Scripture Union of Western Australia. Belonging to a worldwide interdenominational family, we have many years experience in both camping and working with schools. As an organisation and as individuals we are committed to giving young people an opportunity to consider the Christian faith and world view as an option for themselves.

Warriuka operates in an educational setting. Accordingly we are committed to raising issues of faith in a manner which is educationally valid, and invites a critical appraisal. Pressure on students to accept our stance, or indoctrination, are both unethical and counter productive. At camp we use issues raised by the activities at camp to consider deeper questions relating to personal and spiritual development. The discussion of issues will happen during debriefing times but may also happen 'on the run' during activities, informally during the day and as a formal part of the program.

Running camps is our speciality, so it's only natural that we take care of the Departments and your Principal's main concerns. These links are provided for you so that you as school staff can have as much assistance in planning your end of camp as possible.  Many of the requirements that the Department of Education has, we take care of.  Please contact one of our staff who are more than happy to explain exactly how.
