Scripture Union Neighbourhood Outreach (SUNO)SUPPORTING and TRAINing churches to connect with and build ongoing relationships with local young people
The vision behind suno It could be said about many Scripture Union ministries, that they involve people moving outside of their usual community of faith to minister to children and young people for a short period of time. This often results in new friendships and excitement at ministering with the broader church, but it can also mean that it is difficult to sustain ongoing follow-up and nurture of young people and children contacted. This could be represented like this:
SUNO’s aim is to partner with churches, resourcing and working with them, to help them develop programs and strategies to reach young people in their local area, with the gospel of Jesus. The line between churches and SU becomes less distinguishable as programs are run in partnership. Our hope is that this results in a much higher rate of ongoing contact and follow-up and young people being drawn into the life of the church, as well as churches become more effective at ministering and reaching out to young people through training, consulting and program development. This new situation might be represented like this:
The formal Vision Statement for SUNO sums this up:
PurposeIn order to carry out SUWA’s mission, Scripture Union Neighbourhood Outreach seeks to: Support and train churches to connect with and develop ongoing relationships with local young people.
Key features of a SUNO contact or program:- Aims to reach young people not otherwise contacted through existing church or SU programs
- Encourages local churches to work together
- Most of the leaders are drawn from the local churches
- Encourages flexibility in program style to suit local needs
There are possibilities for holiday programs, regional camps, day programs, one off events, long term programs, schools work...the limit is only the ideas of people and the needs of the local area. We will journey with people and churches as together we explore the options for sharing the gospel of Jesus with children and young people in the local area.
