A Schools Ministry Team (SMT) is a group of volunteers from
the surrounding churches, usually led by either the school chaplain,
or a youth worker/pastor. The team works together to form a strategy
for ministry in the school, and implements programs that will
facilitate the development of relationships with students.
A Community Christian Presence
The Schools Ministry Team exists to be a community Christian
presence in the school, working in unity to introduce young
people to Jesus.
How is an SMT formed?
SU assists the Team Leader to bring together volunteers from
churches in the local area. The Secondary Schools Coordinator
works alongside the school chaplain and local church representatives
to bring together a team of people committed to ministry in
the school.
What are the opportunities for ministry in the school?
There are so many ways you can be involved in the life of your
local school! You could run a lunchtime games program, a discussion
group, a prayer group, a breakfast club, a mentoring program,
a sporting program, a camp, an after-school club. the opportunities
are endless!
Why work in a TEAM?
- A team has ONE clear direction, and a clear strategy
for achieving goals
- A team can run a variety of programs in the one school
that complement each other
- A team is inclusive, involving a variety of people from
different churches
- A team creates local community ownership - if a variety
of people are involved, the local Christian community owns the
ministry in the school, instead of just one church being involved
Training and Resources
SU organises training for the SMT, specific to the needs of
the team. SU is committed to developing the team so that they
can effectively ministry to the students, and provides resources
specific to secondary schools ministry.
